Is it legal to drive around with a European license plate on the front of your car?

I live in New York state, and just got a swedish license plate as a gift from my parents. It has the same license # as my New York plates do. Am I allowed to put this on the front of my volvo, but keep my New York plate on the back? It’s the same number, so why would it matter right? Also, I’ve seen people driving around without ANY license plate in front (from Connecticut) Thanks!

actually it is only legal if the car was imported due to vacation or some other temporary reason. otherwise no if a car is registered in the US then it must have US plates

Well Connecticut only issues one plate. So you are liable to see a lot of different plates on the front of those cars. I knew of some drivers that put expired plates from other states in the front (it is legal) so that they could evade traffic tickets.
If you mount both plates on the front, there should be no problem, use the lower two holes of the front plate to hold it is place.

in new york it’s illegal i think.

i live in nj, and i know from my travels that the only states that only have a back licence plate are arizona and north carolina. some states have it optional, but new jersey and new york have stricter motoring laws than arizona due to the heavy population.

i see people hang it under the real license plate, you can do that if you want.

its fine. just as long as you tell the DVLA that your car is on foreign plates, and they will send a registration document. but you need to cover the foreign EU flag thingy at the side with a ‘GB’ one. I think you can get the stickers like that now, to put at the side of the plate…

it would be much simpler to contact your local department of motor vehicles and ask them to to expect correct answers here.
