Bulgarian Translator Awarded For Outstanding Foreign Literature Promotion

Anzelina  Penceva has translated many Czech books into the Bulgarian language in recent years. Amongst them are Milan Kindera, Bohumil Hrabal, Karel Capek, Vladimir Neff, and Jiri Kratochvil. The Premia Bohemica is presented to one exceptional translator every year to recognize his or her contribution to the Czech literature. The previous 2009 award was won by Duong Tat Tu from Vietnam.

The Premia Bohemica is one amongst many other translation awards. There are quite a few translation awards for acknowledging English translators in particular. Here are some of the well known English translation awards in the UK and USA.

The Marsh Award for Children’s Literature in Translation

This award is designed to showcase the excellent quality and diversity of English translated fictions for young readers. The first award dates back to 1996 and it is only presented every two years to one distinguished translator. The award aims to encourage more translation of foreign language children books to English and publishing them in the UK. According to The UK English-Speaking Union which awards this recognition, most short-listed fiction includes books translated from Chinese, Danish, Dutch, French, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Swedish and Yiddish. The 2009 award winner was Sarah Ardizzone for her translation of “Toby Alone” from French, which also landed her a £2000 prize.

The Best Translated Book Award

This is an annual award presented to the best original translation to English for any book published within the past year. The award is sponsored by the Open Letter Books organisation, which is the book translation press for the University of Rochester. The award started in 2008 with the aim to honour and celebrate the translators, editors, publishers and their literary supporters. There are two awards, one for best fiction translation, and the other for best poetry translation. The winner for the 2010 fiction translation award was “The Confessions of Noa Weber” translated by Dalya Bilu. On the other hand, Elena Fanailova won the poetry translation award with her work on “The Russian Version”.

The Independent Foreign Fiction Prize

This award was first given by the British newspaper ‘The Independent’ in the 1990 but stopped after 1995. It was then revived in 2001 with the support from Arts Council England. The award is designed to honour modern fiction translation works in the UK. The entries can be either short stories or fictions, but they must be published in English translation in the UK during the year before the award is given. The award acknowledges both the original writer and the translator. Therefore, the author must be alive at the time when the translated version is published in the UK. The 2009 winners were Evelio Rosero (original author) and Anne McLean (translator) for the literature “The Armies”. 

The Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize

The award recognizes translators for their outstanding work in translating any book into English from any other living European language. The prize was first awarded back in 1999 with the aim to honour the craft of translation, and recognise its cultural importance. Anthea Bell won the £2000 cash price in 2009 for her work on “How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone” by Sasa Stanisic.

Instead of searching for a single word, prepare a list of synonyms (words that mean close to the same thing).

The Word ‘Can’

If you want to find the word that means ‘can’ as in ‘to be able to’, your list might be something like this:

can
able
capable

Now, if you search for ‘can’ in foreign language dictionaries, you might discover the following in the English-[Foreign Language] section:

* German *

Büchse
Dose
Kanister
können
dürfen

You know that German capitalizes all nouns, so you eliminate the first three words. The main definition for ‘können’ is ‘to be able to’, and the main definition for ‘dürfen’ is ‘to be allowed to’. Therefore, the correct word in this case is likely ‘können’.

* French *

poubelle
arrosoir
pouvoir

‘Poubelle’ means ‘garbage can’; ‘arrosoir’ means ‘watering-can’; and ‘pouvoir’ means ‘to be able to’. The correct word in French is probably ‘pouvoir’.

* Portuguese *

lata
ferro-velho
poder

‘Lata’ means ‘can, tin, tin can’; ‘ferro-velho’ means ‘garbage can’; and ‘poder’ means ‘to be able to’. The correct word in Portuguese would most likely be ‘poder’.

The Word ‘Check’

‘Check’ can mean ‘check mark’; ‘bill at a restaurant’; ‘part of a pattern of squares’; ‘to ensure or confirm’. If we are looking for the definition that means ‘to ensure or confirm’ we might make the following list:

check
ensure
verify
confirm

Now let’s see what we find when we investigate the word ‘check’:

* German *

Rechnung
Beschränkung
überprüfen
kontrollieren
Kontrolle
nachprüfen

First we remove the capitalized words (nouns). This leaves three words to research: ‘überprüfen’ (to examine, check); ‘kontrollieren’ (to control, supervise, to check); ‘nachprüfen’ (to check, verify); therefore, ‘nachprüfen’ appears to be most similar to our desired definition.

* Italian *

A search in an Italian dictionary gives us the following partial list:

controllare
verificare
assegno
assegno
bancario

‘Controllare’ (to audit, check, check up on, supervise, verify); ‘verificare’ (to audit, check, check up on, supervise, verify); ‘assegno’ (check, cheque); and ‘assegno bancario’ (check, cheque).

It would appear that either ‘controllare’ or ‘verificare’ would suffice.

* Swedish *

The list of results:

besiktiga
kontrollera
check

Reverse-lookup gives us these definitions: ‘besiktiga’ (inspect, audit, check, check up on, supervise, verify); ‘kontrollera’ (audit, check, check up on, supervise, verify); and ‘check’ (check, cheque).

It seems that we could use either ‘besiktiga’ or ‘kontrollera’.

Resources

Use your common sense, books, people, and the resources on your computer.

Whenever possible, try to find a dictionary that includes example sentences. Seeing a word used in context is the best way to zero in on its exact meaning.

Word processor thesauri and grammar functions will be valuable assets. Online dictionaries are plentiful – use them whenever you can. Make sure that you have at least one recently published printed dictionary and/or thesaurus nearby. When in doubt, try to get advice from a teacher, a friend who speaks the language, or an online forum.

Now, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. That’s the way we learn. Whenever possible try to use words in everyday speech. Remember: your language learning will progress more quickly if you don’t obsess over errors.

Whenever you’re studying a foreign language, regardless if it’s through a free online language course or from a dusty old course book, an important and continuous chapter will be dedicated undoubtedly to grammar. A few of the most common elements that you will be focusing on include word order, word shaping (or shape shifting) and gender. Let’s take a look at what each concept is and how to study it with more ease.

Word order

Well you guessed… this concept refers to (gasp!) word order. It’s probably the most important aspect of a language’s grammar since even if you can’t shape your words to perfection or even if you don’t hit all the word genders right, if you get the word order correctly then at least you can make yourself understood. The trick here is to notice the SAO order of the language. SAO refers to the order of the Subject, Action and Object inside a sentence. For example, English sentences are usually in a SAO order, whereas Japanese ones are SOA. Northern languages such as Swedish, Norwegian or Danish use an ASO sentence word order for the most part.

Word shaping

Verbs, adjectives, nouns and other word types can vary in form depending on the sentence’s context, word order, the subject of the sentence, the number of subjects and the tense. This is not necessarily a nailed-in fact for ALL languages, but it applies to most, hence it’s treated as one of the most important concept in learning any language’s grammar rules.

The power with which the words change shapes depends on the above mentioned factors and some can even change the meaning of the word in cause, whereas others will e simple “grammatical markers” or affixes.

Gender

Gender classification varies from language to language, some language using two genders to divide nouns (masculine and feminine) while others use a third type (usually neuter). Examples of languages using two gender classifications include French, Italian or Spanish, whereas languages using three gender classifications include German, English or Romanian. Unfortunately, each language has its own rules that determine the gender. For example, in Italian, if the noun ends with the letter “o” then it’s masculine, if it ends in “a” it’s feminine and if it ends in “e” it could be either (it’s not a third gender, but it can be both masculine or feminine). In English, the gender is determined by the choice of pronoun: he, she or it. In Romanian, an easy way to determine the gender of a noun is to “count” the noun up to 2. For masculine the counting will be “un” ; “doi” . For feminine it will be “o” ; “doua” and lastly, for neuter it will be a combination of the two: “un” ; “doua” .

Well that’s about it for grammar, now make sure you go study the flow of the above-mentioned elements so that you can start having a normal conversation in your new language. It might help if you look around the Internet for free online language courses that could provide further help with grammar rules for the specific language you’re studying.
