Find yourself a 6′ tall blond Swedish babe, that does not speak a word of English….. you’ll learn so fast, your head will spin :)

At least there are lots of Swedish-language online newspapers available for you, for example Expressen, Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter etc. Reading is a great way to build your vocabulary as well as help understanding. You can also try to find Swedish chat forums and try to communicate there by writing.

I’m not a linguist myself, but any linguist would tell you that the best way is to go to Sweden or take a class to learn Swedish, not put $500 down on Rosetta Stone software. But I also think you can learn a lot online by listening to mp3 files, communication with people from Sweden, and educational websites. On youtube there are quite a few dubbed videos you can watch to help you pick up the language (under search bar type keywords like “swedish english dubbed”). You can also order books online from amazon that can help you with your grammar. I’ve found you can learn quite a bit just by looking at google’s preview for books (http://books.google.com/books?q=swedish). Select the book you want to see and then click “preview”, and often it will allow you to see around a hundred pages of the book for free.

Here’s an additional list of good sites for learning Swedish, free of charge:

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/1290/ (lessons with mp3 files for guiding pronounciation)
http://www.loecsen.com/travel/index.php?lang=en (flash device; you click on certain common phrases & a native speaker will pronounce it for you)
http://fsi-language-courses.com/Swedish.aspx (around 20 half-hour long tapes in Swedish in mp3 form that you can actually download to an mp3 player or on your computer by right clicking the link and pressing ’save target as’ and upload it into your library)

    Good luck!
